<image:title>Calendar - It Occured My Mind But a Bit Too Late For Helsinki Biennial, Meiju Niskala has created a participatory work in which visitors roam the island’s rocky shores and meadows following instructions they hear via a headset. It can be described as a poetic and participatory audio work. Performance dates: June 12 - September 26 Vallisaari, Helsinki, Finland WEDNESDAY AND FRIDAY 12pm /1 pm /3 pm /4 pm/ 5 pm</image:title>

<image:title>Selected works - The Experimental City Consult (participatory performance) - The Experimental City Consult</image:title>
<image:caption>Where can one find the most surprising or romantic experiences in the city, or the best places and moments to lose the sense of time? What are the elements that create firming, reckless, hilarious, scary, crystal clear, unclear or tendering experiences? How do we commit to the place we live in and how to re-do the routines? The Experiential City Consult was created for the Helsinki Festival in 2008. Since then it has toured actively around Finland with altogether hundreds of people visiting the reception.
This live art -piece happens in a public space, and it's free for user. Each consultation takes approximately 15-20 mins, and in each session the user will fill out a form where they describe their background and choose which kind of experience they would need; unclear, artistic, firming, causing respect, strengthening the presence etc. After a short interview the consult will give them a toolbox that includes 1-5 recipes for different experiences. After doing the exercises and experiments, the users will be asked to report and share the documentation in the guestbook on the website. Altogether there is more than 150 different experiments and exercises (cloud psychoanalysis, active wondering, bustravel art, a bird ballet etc.). The main mission is to show the possibilities of urban space, life and give tasks for everyday performativity. At the consult's portable office there is also an assistant, who at the rush hours operates at a take away window and gives "consultation lite". In this artwork NIskala inserts herself into role of serious status and combines this to the playfullness. This are the keyelements of her work, twisted perspectives, that sets her in the artistic canon started from surrealism, fluxus and International Situationistic movement.</image:caption>

<image:title>Selected works - We have hospitality! (participatory performance) - We have hospitality</image:title>
<image:caption>COMMISSIONED WORK BY MÄNTTÄ ART WEEK, 2014 Niskala’s art often reflects the question of what one would do, if s/he had only 100 hours left with the world. At the piece We Have Hospitality various kind of people learnt to understand the world and humanity by spending time with people who have different values from them, with people unknown. In the piece five foreign community members were invited as guests to Mänttä. The visits started at noon and lasted until the following morning. The guests got to sleep in a children's play house, a boat or a terrace. There were no ordinary alarm clocks; instead the notes of an accordionist playing outside the window were heard in the morning. Starting point for this piece was counterbalance for fear – more we are afraid, the more we hold back. The world being in the state it is at the moment it feels even more important for us to be able to depend on each other, lean on one another, and not to seclude the rest of the world from around us. Everything that happened during the visits was based on suggestions and offers of hospitality. In some ways gifts and proposals: This is what I can give from my life to others.</image:caption>

<image:title>Selected works - Essentialization Station (live art and participatory installation) - Essentialization Station</image:title>
<image:caption>COMMISSIONED WORK BY THE CITY OF OULU, 2014 Essentialization Station spread out to the center of Oulu at August 2014, inviting city dwellers to meaningful encounters. The work made people stop to breathe in the same moment and reflect together on what's up with us and the world today. The pathway, prone to discussion, urged people to think about what is essential in life and to share their thoughts, especially with strangers. The work elaborated on various themes, such as loss of time, gratitude, fear, courage, threats, doing things differently, change and opportunities. As part of the work, letters were written to future residents of Oulu who would receive them in three years time. These letters would be distributed through a magistrate to newborns and people who moved to Oulu in January 2017. Participants: 30 000 people.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Selected works - Turku365 – 32 artworks for European Cultural Capital - Red Carpet Over A Wasteland</image:title>
<image:caption>The centre of Turku has a mountain hidden from citizens ofer 100 years. At 2011 420,81 metres of red carpet were placed to guide the inhabitants of Turku to view hidden urban sceneries from the Kakola Hill. The red carpet was woven by 1059 weavers of the Varsinais-Suomi Arts and Crafts Association and the Taito centres operated by Åbolands Hantverks. On July 21st the carpet parade invited the weavers and fellow inhabitants to rest their eyes on a completely new view of our city on one of the seven hills of Turku. Over 4000 guests walked the red carpet during June and July 2011. The guests were asked to think on how they would like to use the wasteland in the future. The thoughts were delivered to the decision makers of Turku. Also a shout choir piece was conducted from this material by Petri Sirviö and Meiju Niskala.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Selected works - Turku365 – 32 artworks for European Cultural Capital - Return of the Tramlines</image:title>
<image:caption>In Finland the tram history begins from Turku, which built the first horse drawn tram rails in 1890. At the end of 1972, all tram lines were removed from use and replaced by buses, which were called the Yellow Dangers. Why was the tram traffic abolished? What memories do people still have of it? And what kind of disputes took place at the city council prior to the final decision on abolition? On Thursday night, 19.5.2011, the rails appeared back on the streets and memories, dreams and conversations resounded in the streets. Meditative walking piece lasted 7 hours 42 mins and was 15,7 kilometres long.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Selected works - Turku365 – 32 artworks for European Cultural Capital - The Lace Veil of Pallivaha</image:title>
<image:caption>One hundred years ago this was common knowledge everywhere: huge Pallivaha-stone was the best spot for a Sunday picnic in the entire city of Turku. As the years passed, the forest had grown and the only people who knew the place were students from nearby school and people in neighbourhoods. To illuminate this place out for common knowledge again, a 400 kg lace veil was built on top of the 22 feet big boulder and invited people to come with free picnic bags and maps. <image:caption>Part of the community and site-spesific exercises was A Bus Trip Art -piece. In this experiment people made random art in the local buses with these instructions: Put your pen on the paper and let the bus twitches and stops create an image. Sign your piece, name it, and write greetings to the back side of the card to an unknown recipient. As well known fact: Turku-citizens are not interested in neighbours or not exited about unknown other citizens, this piece was built in order to people experiencing the possibility of try method-based creation and connection to others. All the cards were delivered on Valentine's Day to people living in different parts of Turku, mainly in the areas where most of the people live alone. This was done with the help of volunteers, who delivered nearly 1000 Bus Trip Art -cards to different addresses.</image:caption>

Later three-voice choir groups jumped in trains from Turku and lulled all the sleeping cabins in the night train to sleep one by one. Singer Aliina Mäkitalo arranged three songs for the groups she coached. The choirs hopped in the night trains between Turku and Loimaa from May to December.</image:caption>

<image:caption>For one week in June 2011, everyone could allow themselves to sit down on the riverside benches, rest their head on a pillow, marvel at cumulus clouds that formed shapes resembling cabbages and dragons – or simply close their eyes and listen to the sounds of the early summer. Members of the handicraft workshop of the association of the unemployed in Salo collaborated with the Art Clinic to produce a week-long performance that could be experienced on a stretch of two kilometres and almost one hundred benches alongside the Aura river. At the end of the week the patchwork pillows were given to inhabitants of Turku who wanted to welcome some leisurely peace and quiet into their homes. The artwork was a production of Art Clinic, where groups and private individuals created public urban artworks tailored for their personal skills and interests.</image:caption>

Is there somebody in your place of work who always washes everyone else’s coffee cups without a word of thanks, or seems to spend his or her every vacation ill? Someone whose computer always tends to crash at the critical moment? In February 2011 the citizens of Turku were asked to report their colleagues in need of some cheering up. Reports were given to our Turku365 hotline by phone or using our online tip-off form. Aurajoki Official Singers’ Group composed personalised songs of praise to seven individuals exposed by their co-workers. The songs were performed during working hours with the entire office surprised with polyphonic singing and cakes. Six of the songs were performed in April and one in October 2011. A few hard workers also received a letter and a cd with a song made for them as a surprise. Plants were dusted in the shopping mall, worn crosswalk stripes were repainted using chalk, and pavement grilles of the pedestrian street were vacuumed. The patrol of volunteers also thoroughly cleaned the ears of the Erik Julin statue using cotton sticks and wrote a number of cheery letters that were put into the lonely mailbox of a dilapidated house nearby.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Selected works - Turku365 – 32 artworks for European Cultural Capital - Art For The People</image:title>
<image:caption>Art is a better mirror than metal-coated glass mirrors. It doesn't matter if the person has blueberry soup around their mouth or their hair is pointing in every direction, because art can make us see if we have the right attitude every day. (Female, 26) This artpiece started with the search, in which anyone, who wanted to have art in their life, could participate. The application form asked to explain the need for the art, things that the participant did not get tired of discussing, and reflect on what could be a work of art, if they were to be the artwork themselves. Applications were received from the man in the street, the sick, people on welfare, students, art monsters, as well as people who just wanted to have a keepsake of the Capital of Culture year 2011. At the same time, there was a search for artists who would like to donate an artwork for the 72 people, that were selected from the applications. On Saturday, 19.11. 2011 there was a tent on the Turku Market Square, that had 72 packages inside in it. Those packages had a piece of art each. Every person receiving the package got five minutes to choose their own package, intuitively. Candidates for the pieces of art arrived in advance but in random order, and before entering the tent discussed the importance of art in life of ordinary people. What people think art is needed for? And what occurs when prior wishes and intuition on self-selected work encounter? And finally: did life change when the piece of art arrived home? Selma Vilhunen, oscar-nominated director, directed a document based on the Art for the People -work.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Selected works - Turku365 – 32 artworks for European Cultural Capital - Exercise book for everyday exprorers</image:title>
<image:caption>The Calendar for the Everyday Explorer was carried out as an activity book and calendar under a single cover. The book was dedicated to all dwellers of the city; to children who crochet spider webs onto the holes in stone walls, to lovers who leave romantic messages in pants pockets hanging on clotheslines, and for dads who are wild about doodling flowers, dogs, and fixed gear bikes with chalk here and there. But in particular, the book and its 52 groups associated with the city and their everyday tasks were dedicated to all those who have not yet tried holding a picnic in the parking lot gutters or experiencing the treasures of the city as their own. The book was published as part of the Turku365 - The Year of Exploration of Everyday Life, which took place in Turku, the European Capital of Culture in 2011. A weekly program based on the book was made for the Nationa roadcast COmpany Yle Turku radio channel by reporter Kalle Talonen. The tasks in the book were also published on the website where anyone could report on the implementation of the tasks. 52 Finnish artists and thinkers, as well as 52 school and day care groups were invited into the exploration of everyday life. You can be inspired by their task implementations even after the calendar year at www.arjenlöytöretkeilijät.fi</image:caption>

<image:title>Selected works - Dear Fellow Citizens (participatory performance and book) - Dear Fellow Citizens</image:title>
<image:caption>COMMISSIONED WORK BY HELSINKI FESTIVAL WEEKS, 2013 All the wisdom we have in the world, needs to be shared. This work was based on several workshops and exercises with senior citizens. How does a senior citizen feel when reading the news about climate change, financial inequality, terrorism, water pollution, over population and the collapse of the welfare state? Age itself doesn't bring wisdom, but it brings some life experience, and some ability to differentiate between the things we should focus on or not, in order to spread the idea of good life not only in our own life, but to other people's lives. Work was built as a part of participatory performance, series of temporary tattoos and a book about good life. It was presented on Helsinki Olympic Rowing Station on August 2013. One of the issues that was most talked about had something to do with freedom: we always have the freedom to choose how we deal with the challenges brought on by life, the freedom to choose how we grow as humans as a result of them, the freedom to go towards our dreams, and the freedom to wonder, to learn, to be inspired, and to face the world together with other people. The book is only available in Finnish.</image:caption>

<image:caption>commissioned work by Kiasma, the Finnish Museum of Contemporary Art, 2013 The biggest junk that prevents us from seizing life, is the junk in our mind. Niskala has long career not only as artist but also exact pedagog. From the end of 1990’s she has worked in public spaces with students from different backrounds investigating the tactics of participation and influencing. Junk-a-tron was commissioned work by Kiasma, the Finnish Museum of Contemporary Art, and its School of Activism -project, where contemporary artists were helping young people to influence society through art. In particular, in this piece the focus was on the junk of our mind, which makes it difficult to think clearly and go forward in life. This flash mob tenderly distrubted the Helsinki center and transportation in September 2013, inserting over 50 mind trash collectors to collect all sort of trash from citizens minds, pockets and bags. More than 400 kilograms of junk was collected.</image:caption>

<image:caption>For Helsinki Biennial, Meiju Niskala has created a participatory work in which visitors roam the island’s rocky shores and meadows following instructions they hear via a headset. This public art happening is informed by Niskala’s background as a performance artist and writer. The work can also be described as a poetic and participatory audio work. It revolves around various types of encounters, with people encountering themselves, other people, nonhuman species and the environment. “Listening is a way of forging a link with the environment. Choosing to listen to everything you are capable of hearing is ultimately a political act.” HELSINKI BIENNIAL 2021</image:caption>

<image:title>Selected works - When Breathing In Isn't Enough (book) - When breathing in isn’t enough</image:title>
<image:caption>Published BY WSOY, 2020 Consolation sentences for anyone who sometimes has to focus only on survival. Just about anything can happen, to anyone, in any order. But even if everything feels crushing, survival is possible. When deep breathing is not enough is a beautiful, strong and bright work, and it builds stairs away from the moments of despair each of us may have to experience. It supports and comforts in situations where not everything really seems to be getting organized, neither immediately nor maybe tomorrow. The book is made up of miniature posters that remind you that sometimes even deep breathing can be too demanding. Unpretentious and honest phrases of comfort address and help in mercy to oneself, a life situation, or a difficult phase for a living loved one. Posters can be teared of and used for a wall or as post cards.</image:caption>

<image:caption>BUBLISHER WSOY, 2019 NOMINATED FOR RUNEBERG-PRIZE THE MOST BEAUTIFUL BOOK OF THE YEAR- PRIZE One Hundred Letters to a Dead Mother is a story of loss, sorrow, and how to learn to live in an irreversibly changed world. In this work Niskala weaves her intimate familiar history into a bright artwork. Narration coming out not only as a book, but a book and extra parts, she stretches the boundaries of an idea of a book and narration. The following add-ons for this book can be ordered separately: A TELEPHONE SERMON presented by the author A SMALL BOOK ABOUT A SIDE PERSON CALLED GRANDPA ADULT STICKER CALENDAR SONG OVER DEATH - audio recording. The song can be downloaded from the internet as no one should die involuntarily alone. After the artist's own life and even after the death of the Internet, the song can be found in digital form in the archives of the National Library. Oscar-nominated filmmaker Selma Vilhunen is preparing a movie based on Niskala’s book.</image:caption>
